Case Study

Bar Choir, Discovery Nightclub

Participatory music and hospitality format created, DJed and hosted at Discovery Nightclub before being taken across the Northern Territory.

Context

Discovery Nightclub and The Lost Arc operated in Darwin’s hospitality and nightlife market, where mid-week programming needed to create a reason for people to attend, participate and stay. Bar Choir became a recurring venue format rather than a one-off event.

Problem

Tuesday night was, by user-supplied account, one of the weakest trading nights. The venue needed a repeatable format that could build community, support hospitality workers and patrons, and create a distinctive participation-led experience rather than relying only on ordinary DJ programming.

Benjamin’s Role

Benjamin created the Bar Choir format, acted as DJ and main host, and hosted the format from 2016 through 2022. He also took the format on the road across the Northern Territory.

What Benjamin Built Or Changed

He developed a structured social music format combining DJ control, hosted crowd participation, karaoke-style group singing, humour, venue rhythm and repeat attendance. The format ran on Saturdays and Tuesday nights, with Tuesday becoming the signature hospitality-night version.

Stakeholders

Discovery Nightclub, The Lost Arc, venue management, hospitality workers, patrons, performers, regional venues and Darwin nightlife audiences.

Delivery Approach

The approach was practical event product design: build a format simple enough to repeat weekly, distinctive enough to become part of venue identity, and flexible enough to travel across different Northern Territory venues and audiences.

Outcomes

By user-supplied account, Bar Choir turned Tuesday night from the least profitable night into the most profitable night excluding Saturdays. Public listings show Bar Choir continuing as a Darwin venue format after Benjamin’s hosting period, and later Darwin event listings show related Bar Choir activity continuing in other venues.

What It Demonstrates

Community building, experience design, live hosting, audience behaviour insight, hospitality programming and the ability to turn an informal idea into a repeatable commercial format.

Source Or Evidence Note

Public sources confirm Bar Choir as an ongoing Darwin / Lost Arc event format. Benjamin’s role as creator, DJ and host, the 2016 to 2022 hosting period, roadshow scope, commercial-performance impact and copy-cat claim are user-supplied and should be confirmed before final publication.
